Mobile GMaps is a free (but not yet open source) application that displays maps from Yahoo Maps, OpenStreetMap and other sources on Java-enabled mobile phones and PDAs. Mobile GMaps can connect to GPS receivers in order to automatically display the map on an actual position.
A logical extension to this is to include points of interest (POIs) and real route planning and navigation instructions.
A special feature is, that one can download maps while online before a trip and store them on a memory card in order to use them on the go without having to access the internet (stored maps/data, offline mode). This feature needs to be enhanced for end users.
A map of the neighborhood of his actual position is presented to the user.
If there are POIs (such as historic buildings, natural objects, viewpoints ... ) in a surrounding of predefined radius, the user is alerted. He then has the possibility to request audio information about the objects.
In a further step such POIs might be connected to a path and by doing so an audio guide for an interesting region is realized.
Make extensions to MGMaps...
All these extensions would include java tools (be it as desktop or webapplication) which enables users can easily download and install all data needed for offline mode (locally stored data).
The routing functionality can build on a given, external routing webservice (in cooperation with Uni Bonn, see OpenRouteService). This routing webservice is standardized with the OpenLS/XML protocol.
In a further step such POIs might be connected to a path and by doing so an audio guide for an interesting region is realized.
The test area and data (inc. audio files) comes from Rapperswil-Jona, Switzerland (see Rappi Info).
